Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Cades Cove is on the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in the northwest of the park. From Asheville, it’s about a 3- to 4-hour drive, especially in winter when you have to drive around the park. Route 441 through the park between Cherokee and Gatlinburg is often closed in winter due to snow and ice.
Smokemont, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Smokemont has a lot of great hikes right from your site. Bradley fork joins the Oconaluftee River here. Sometimes in winter, the main road through the park, as well as the adjoining southern terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway, is closed due to snow and ice. This is a great opportunity to road bike or run without any vehicle traffic. For technical mountain biking, check out Cherokee’s Fire Mountain.
Winter Camping In Western North Carolina
Nature turns ice into fascinating sculptures. Waterfalls are brimming. Bluebird days illuminate the forests and mountain summits. Sunsets seem even more rich and colorful. The golden hour casts its magic and hypnotizes, putting the observer in a trance of gratitude.
Davidson River Campground
Located right on the Davidson River at the entrance of Pisgah National Forest Ranger District in Brevard. Situated in Transylvania County (known as the “Land of the Water Falls”), this campground is a 15 minute drive from Brevard, 45 minutes from Asheville or 30 minutes from Hendersonville. Weather permitting you can ride your bike on the Greenway to and from downtown Brevard. The Greenway passes Oscar Blues Brewery and Taproom, where you’ll also find a food truck. In Brevard, you’ll also find Ecusta Brewing Co, Brevard Brewing and Upcountry Brewing.
Curtis Creek Campground
Curtis Creek campground is in Pisgah National Forest at the base of the Blue Ridge Parkway below Snooks Nose and Green Knob. It is just outside Old Fort along Curtis Creek. This is Bear Sanctuary in NC Game-lands. This historic area, is the first tract of National Forest land in America.

We took our van on a little adventure, traveling six hours from the 828 to explore Jeckyll Island and the next day to St. Mary’s to explore Cumberland Island. While both were beautiful, Cumberland Island National Seashore took the cake. We parked the van, boarded the ferry and bike-packed, first camping at Stafford, which surprisingly had flush toilets, cold showers and electricity. We were expecting primitive camping. Next up was Yankee Paradise. We wished we had pedaled on to Brickyard Bluff, on the water facing the marsh. On the third night we settled in to Sea Camp, a lush island garden of Eden. We vowed to return to Cumberland Island as often as possible. This is to the coast what our Great Smokies are to our mountains. We’re in Ocala, Florida now, where mountain biking is king. Pitched camp at Santos Campground, with more than 80 miles of single track for all skill levels, and the paved Marjorie Harris Carr Greenway, which runs, if we’re not wrong, for 110 miles. She’s one sweet little van, the Travato 59G, which can sleep two adults and two additional people who are much shorter than I am (thinks kids - I’m 6’4”). We had a rental cancelled this week, so we thought we’d take her out for a spin. What I like about this van over the other two is the dinette. It converts to a bed for two, while the larger one in the back is sort of like a Murphy bed. It will fold up and out of the way for carrying gear, etc. #my828life #travato #travato59g #winnebago #vanlife
We missed the vans but loved South Carolina’s Low Country. All three of our camper vans are rented heavily throughout the summer, meaning our stays are in resorts and hotels. Of those, we did not enjoy the Omni Hilton Head Island. Overcrowded and overpriced (luckily we had a credit for a free night to pay for the $600+ per night room). We did enjoy the Hampton Inn Beaufort, situated on the water and framed by live oaks draped in Spanish Moss. Hilton Head would probably have been more enjoyable during the late fall, winter or early spring. It was congested and overdeveloped. In contrast, quiet and lovely Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge was the star of the show on Hilton Head. After a couple hours of biking among the pines, oaks and birds, we made our way to Beaufort, SC. Historical homes and a cute downtown made us want to come back. About half an hour toward the coast from Beaufort is Hunting Island, a real gem of a state park with beautiful beaches, maritime forests and an old lighthouse, as well as a campground. The lessons from this trip: 1) #vanlife is a good life. We love traveling with our tiny home on wheels. 2) I-26 can be horrendous and dispiriting. 3) Nature tops resorts every time.
